Nitrogen for SLS Formlabs

Revolutionize your selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing experience with our cutting-edge Nitrogen Generation system designed exclusively for Formlabs SLS printers. We understand the critical role that nitrogen plays in achieving exceptional print quality, minimizing defects, and optimizing the performance of your Formlabs SLS machine.

Nitrogen Generator

Nitrogen is important for Formlabs SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) 3D printing for several key reasons:
Oxygen Exclusion: Nitrogen is an inert gas that contains very low levels of oxygen. In SLS 3D printing, minimizing the presence of oxygen within the printing chamber is crucial. Oxygen can react with and degrade certain SLS materials, leading to poor print quality and undesirable defects in the final printed parts. By using nitrogen to displace oxygen, you create a controlled and oxygen-free printing environment, reducing the risk of oxidation. Improved Print Quality: The absence of oxygen in the printing chamber helps maintain the integrity of the SLS material being used. This results in superior print quality with smoother surface finishes, increased part accuracy, and enhanced mechanical properties. Nitrogen assists in achieving the desired aesthetic and functional characteristics in your 3D-printed parts. Reduced Defects: Oxygen exposure during the SLS printing process can cause issues like warping, discoloration, and incomplete fusion of powder particles. Nitrogen minimizes these defects, leading to more reliable and consistent printing outcomes. Fewer defects mean less material waste and increased production efficiency.
Material Performance: SLS materials, such as powdered thermoplastics or metals, can be sensitive to environmental factors like temperature, humidity, and oxygen levels. Nitrogen helps maintain optimal conditions for these materials, ensuring they perform at their best. This is especially important when working with high-performance or specialty materials where consistency and quality are critical. Enhanced Safety: Nitrogen is non-flammable and non-toxic, making it a safe choice for creating an inert printing environment. It reduces the risk of fire hazards associated with some SLS materials and ensures a safer workspace for users. In summary, nitrogen is important for Formlabs SLS 3D printing because it helps create a controlled, oxygen-free environment within the printing chamber. This controlled environment enhances print quality, reduces defects, improves material performance, and contributes to a safer printing process. Nitrogen is a valuable tool for achieving consistent and high-quality results in SLS 3D printing applications.

SUCCESSFUL TRIALS AT FORMLABS GERMANY
The nitrogen generator Mini 5-50 with an integrated tank for purging has been tested in collaboration with Formlabs in Germany. The printer Fuse 1+30W  utilized the material Nylon 11, known for its rigid and tough properties, ideal for printing high-performance parts. Formlabs recommends using a nitrogen purge to prevent oxidation, with a flowrate of max. 1,2 Nm3/hr. The task was perfectly fullfilled by the nitrogen generator 5-50, which has an output of 1,4 Nm3/hr at a purity ≥ 99,5 %, being connected to compressed air network of 6 bar(g).
